Second Vatican Council - 50th Anniversary
This year is the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican council. Pope John XIII announced his intention to call a council in 1959. After long preparation the first session opened on 11th October 1962 and lasted two months. The second session opened on 29th September 1963 and lasted also two months. The third session began on 14th September 1964 and lasted two and a half months. The final session began on 14th September 1965 and lasted almost three months ending on 8th December.
At the beginning of the first session the gathered Church Fathers issued the following statement: ‘In this assembly, under the guidance of the Holy spirit, we wish to inquire how we ought to renew ourselves, so that we may be found increasingly faithful to the gospel of Christ. We shall take pains to present to the men of this age God’s truth in its integrity and purity that we may understand it and gladly assent to it. ... Faith, hope and the love of Christ impel us to serve our brothers, thereby patterning ourselves after the example of the Divine Teacher who ‘came to serve not to be served. ... Hence, the Church too was born not to dominate but to serve...’
During the final session Pope Paul VI said: ’... from now on we must undertake the quest for a deeper understanding of the spirit of the Council and the faithful application of the norms it has happily and prayerfully provided.’
In its paperback version, the Council documents extend to some 750 pages. In a series of brief articles, here and in the Newsletter, I shall attempt to give an outline of these documents. (Fr Tibor)
