Corpus Christi 07
Corpus Christi is a simple feast with a complicated background. It is simple because we simply celebrate the gift
of Holy Communion, in which God gives himself to us physically as well as spiritually.
We know that Communion is divine
because we feel different after having received it
and we feel poorer if go without it for a long time.
The background is complicated because it stretches back to the time of animal sacrifices
and the earliest history of the people of Israel.
It is enough for us to go back to the time of the Last Supper when Jesus took some bread and said:
take it and eat, this is my body. Then he took a cup and said:
drink from this all of you, for this is my blood, the blood of the covenant poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
In the divine physics it is possible for God
to be physically present in the host and wine every time, all the time and for every one of us.
It seems that God is going about giving himself to us in a very simple and very humble manner.
He could have come with thunder and lightning every time, filling the church with a blinding light and giving us all an electric shock. But no, we can quietly come forward and receive him on our hand or tongue
and be filled with peace instead of fear.
So let us return that peace to our neighbour by being uncomplicated, open and truthful people striving to be of service.
