Both the first reading and the Gospel carry the message
that God protects his own servants.
We can understand that,
this is what we expect from human organizations.
An attack on a police officer is an attack on the police force;
an attack on a nurse is an attack on NHS staff and so on.
Once we committed ourselves to God, we can expect
his protection.
Jesus explained that to the apostles,
God watches over all creation, especially human beings
and even more so his own servants and friends.
Jesus speaks out against fear of any sort.
Fear indicates
that a person does not understand his/her relationship with God.
Jesus, through his closeness to God, knew what is life
was about, he faced his difficulties and was in command
of his own destiny.
He did not worry about his enemies,
his past or his future.
His agony in the garden, before his arrest, was brief.
He did not find his suffering insufferable,
although it killed him in the end.
Worrying is an unhealthy activity, it should carry
a government health warning: worrying causes diseases, worrying kills.
It fosters other unhealthy activities as well,
like anxiety, bitterness, impatience, avarice, unkindness, judgementalness and condemnation,
all poisoning our mind and body.
So let us avoid fear and worry and follow the desire of our soul which knows God and cannot be corrupted.
